Schönbrunn Palace History: Habsburg Summer Residence
Schönbrunn grew from an estate outside Vienna into a principal summer residence of the Habsburg court. Its current appearance reflects successive architectural and landscape projects rather than one moment of construction.
A residence shaped by the court
Under Maria Theresa in the eighteenth century, the palace took on its role as an imperial household and ceremonial setting. Later generations continued to use the residence, including Emperor Franz Joseph, who was born and died there.
Palace and gardens together
Formal parterres, long garden sightlines, the Neptune Fountain and Gloriette belong to a designed ensemble around the residence. UNESCO’s listing for Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens explains its heritage significance.
