Acropolis of Athens History: Citadel to Parthenon

The Acropolis had a long history before the classical monuments that define its skyline. Mycenaean occupation preceded the fifth-century BCE building programme; the hill later changed use repeatedly, and restoration remains part of its present story.

From fortified hill to sacred centre

Its defensible height and position above Athens gave the Acropolis significance before its best-known temples. The Persian destruction of 480 BCE preceded the rebuilding that produced the Propylaea, Parthenon, Erechtheion and Temple of Athena Nike.

Buildings with lives beyond antiquity
